Lupus and the liver

Lupus can affect your liver in a few ways, which impacts how your body digests food and filters waste from your blood.

Lupus, and some lupus medications, can cause hepatitis, inflammation of the liver. When lupus causes hepatitis, it is called autoimmune hepatitis, which is when the immune system is attacking the liver.

Many people with hepatitis don’t notice the symptoms, which can be:

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dark urine
  • Pale or grey stool

Talk with your doctor about any liver problems and/or symptoms you might have. You may need a blood test to check that your liver is working properly.
